Hardware Dependencies for Source Acquisition
Overview
While many visability sources are network-based, some require additional hardware to be captured and displayed. Identifying these dependencies early ensures that all required equipment is in place before commissioning begins.
This is especially important in environments where direct software installation is not possible or where physical signal capture is required.
ADD NOTE on Approved Hardware Devices
Where Hardware is Required
Not all sources can be accessed over the network. In some cases, additional hardware is needed to bring content into visability.
Common scenarios include:
- Systems where software cannot be installed
- HDMI or SDI video outputs from external devices
- Secure or isolated systems with no network access
- KVM or operator workstation sharing requirements
In these cases, hardware-based acquisition becomes necessary.
Common Hardware Approaches
Depending on the source type, different methods may be used to acquire content.
Capture Cards
Capture cards allow Display Nodes to ingest video signals directly from external devices.
- HDMI or SDI inputs connected to a Display Node
- Commonly used for dedicated workstations or standalone systems
- Requires physical connectivity between source and destination
Encoder-Based Solutions
Encoders convert physical video signals into network streams (typically H.264).
- Enables distribution of a single source to multiple Display Nodes
- Reduces the need for direct physical connections
- Common in AV-over-IP environments
KVM and Remote Access Solutions
In environments where full control of a system is required, KVM-based solutions may be used.
- Provides both video and control access
- Useful when software installation is not permitted
- Can integrate with visability as a source
Planning for Hardware Dependencies
Hardware requirements should be identified and finalized as part of the source planning process.
This includes understanding:
- What type of signal the source provides (HDMI, SDI, etc.)
- Whether the source can be accessed over the network
- What hardware is required to capture or convert that signal
- Where that hardware will be physically installed
Missing or undefined hardware dependencies are a common cause of delays during deployment.
Physical and Infrastructure Considerations
Hardware-based sources introduce additional requirements beyond network connectivity.
- Physical cabling between source and capture device
- Rack space and power for encoders or supporting equipment
- Port availability on Display Nodes (e.g., PCIe slots for capture cards)
These should be planned and validated ahead of time to avoid last-minute changes.
Common Issues to Avoid
- Assuming all sources are network-accessible
- Missing required capture hardware at deployment time
- Underestimating cabling or physical installation needs
- Not accounting for system restrictions (no software install, secure environments)
