Group Policy (GPO) Considerations
Overview
When visability systems are joined to a domain, they become subject to Group Policy. While this allows for centralized management, it can also introduce unintended behavior if policies are not reviewed in advance.
This is especially important for Display Nodes and GPU-enabled systems, where certain policies can directly impact system performance and functionality.
Why Group Policy Matters
Group Policy controls how systems behave — from updates and power settings to user sessions and device management.
If policies are applied without considering visability requirements, you may encounter issues such as:
- Displays going to sleep or locking unexpectedly
- Systems logging off and stopping content display
- GPU or driver changes impacting display output
- Background services being interrupted
These issues are often not immediately obvious and can surface during or after commissioning.
Planning OU Placement
To manage this effectively, visability systems should be placed in an appropriate Organizational Unit (OU).
This allows IT teams to apply policies that are aligned with how these systems are intended to operate. In many cases, a dedicated OU is recommended so that visability systems can be managed independently from standard user workstations.
Key Policies to Review
Before commissioning, it is important to review any policies that may impact system behavior.
Pay particular attention to:
- Power settings
Systems should remain fully active and not enter sleep or low-power states - User session behavior
Automatic lock, logoff, or inactivity timeouts can interrupt operation - Windows Updates
Automatic updates — especially driver updates — can impact system stability - Device and driver policies
Restrictions or forced updates may affect GPU performance or display configuration - Remote access policies
Some remote access methods (such as RDP) can interfere with GPU-based rendering
IMPORTANT: Protecting Display Node Behavior
Display Nodes require consistent, uninterrupted operation to function correctly.
Policies that impact login sessions, display settings, or GPU behavior should be carefully reviewed to ensure they do not interfere with:
- Automatic startup of visability applications
- Persistent display output
- Stable GPU configuration
If domain policies override local system settings, it can lead to unexpected or inconsistent display behavior.
Keeping Things Aligned
The goal is not to remove or bypass Group Policy, but to ensure that policies applied to visability systems are compatible with their operational role.
This typically involves coordination between the deployment team and the organization’s IT administrators to validate policy impact before commissioning begins.
