Domain Integration Requirements

Overview

If domain-based authentication has been selected, visability systems must be properly prepared for integration into your organization’s domain environment.

This step ensures that all systems can be successfully joined to the domain and operate reliably within existing IT policies and infrastructure.

Core Requirements for Domain Integration

Domain Accessibility

All visability systems must be able to communicate with domain controllers.

  • Systems can reach domain controllers over the network
  • Required ports for domain communication are open
  • No firewall or segmentation rules block domain traffic

DNS Configuration

Domain environments rely heavily on DNS for system discovery and authentication.

  • DNS must be properly configured and operational
  • visability systems must use the correct DNS servers
  • Domain controllers must be resolvable by hostname

Improper DNS configuration is one of the most common causes of domain join failures.

System Configuration Readiness

Each system should be prepared prior to joining the domain:

  • Correct system time and time zone are configured
  • Systems are fully updated (as appropriate for your environment)
  • Hostnames are finalized and follow organizational standards

Changing system names after domain join can introduce complications, so this should be completed in advance.

Credentials and Permissions

Proper permissions are required to join systems to the domain.

  • A domain account with rights to join machines is available
  • Credentials are accessible during deployment
  • Any organizational restrictions on domain joins are understood

Special Note: Organizational Unit (OU) Planning

While detailed Group Policy configuration is covered separately, it is important to determine where visability systems will reside within the domain structure.

  • Systems should be placed in an appropriate Organizational Unit (OU)
  • OU placement should align with how policies will be applied
  • Coordination with the IT team is recommended prior to deployment

This ensures that systems receive the correct policies and are managed appropriately within the domain.

Common Issues to Avoid

  • Attempting domain join without proper DNS configuration
  • Insufficient permissions to join systems to the domain
  • Incorrect system time causing authentication failures
  • Unclear OU placement leading to unexpected policy application
